MARIAN was afraid! Without warning, her nose had begun to bleed profusely. ?I thought I was going to die,? she recalls. A doctor informed Marian that her nosebleed had been caused by high blood pressure (arterial hypertension). ?But I feel fine,? answered Marian. ?Many people do not know that they have high blood pressure because they have no symptoms,? she replied.

What about your blood pressure? Could your current life-style cause high blood pressure in the future? What can you do to keep your blood pressure under control?

Blood pressure is the force blood exerts against blood vessel walls. It can be measured using an inflatable rubber cuff, which is wrapped around the upper arm and connected to an apparatus that records pressure. Two readings are obtained. For example: 120/80. The first number is called systolic blood pressure because it indicates blood pressure during the heartbeat (systole), and the second number is called diastolic blood pressure because it indicates blood pressure while the heart is relaxed (diastole). Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury, and physicians classify patients as hypertensive when their blood pressure is above 140/90.

What makes blood pressure increase? Imagine that you are watering your garden. By opening the faucet or by reducing the caliber, or diameter, of the jet of water, you increase the pressure of the water. The same occurs with blood pressure: Increasing the rate of flow of blood or decreasing the caliber of the blood vessel elevates the blood pressure. How does high blood pressure occur? Many factors are involved.

Factors You Cannot Control

Researchers have discovered that if a person has relatives with high blood pressure, his chances of suffering from the disease are greater. Statistics indicate a higher incidence of hypertension in identical twins than in fraternal twins. One study refers to the ?mapping of the genes responsible for arterial hypertension,? all of which would confirm the existence of a hereditary component responsible for high blood pressure. The risk of abnormally high blood pressure is also known to increase with age and to be greater among black males.

Factors You Can Control

Watch your diet! Salt (sodium) can boost blood pressure in some people, especially people with diabetes, those with severe hypertension, older people, and some blacks. Excess fat in the bloodstream can create deposits of cholesterol on the internal walls of blood vessels (atherosclerosis), thus reducing their caliber and increasing blood pressure. People who are more than 30

Hypertension, also referred to as high blood pressure, is a common ailment in adults. Stress, improper diet and lack of exercise are some of the causes of hypertension. Dietetic management plays an integral role in helping people with hypertension stay as healthy as they can. What you eat is basically who you are and good food contains nutrients that your body needs to function normally.

Hypertension is also associated to people who are overweight. In this case, intake of high-calorie food should be minimized. For people with average weight, it is best the check a daily-recommended calorie diet that is best suitable for your age, gender and lifestyle.

Eating protein-rich foods like meat and chicken should also be restricted. People with hypertension should have 20 grams per day at a maximum. It can also be calculated as 1 gram per 1 kilogram of one’s body weight. To give a more concrete example, if for instance your weight is 70 kilograms then 70 grams of protein would be enough for one day.

Animal fats are also a no-no. Eat fatty foods pose a greater risk for people with hypertension. An increase intake of fatty foods can even lead to arteriosclerosis but not all fats are bad. You may be allowed to eat foods containing vegetable oils but not oily foods like liver or egg yolk.

One way to lower down blood pressure is to have a low fat and low sodium diet. Two to three grams of sodium would be enough per day. Keeping your potassium level high would also improve your condition. Good sources of potassium include celery, watermelon, tomatoes, bananas and other leafy vegetables. Get enough fluids everyday. If you have hypertension and oedema at the same time, then that’s the only time you need to limit your water intake.

Remember that you should always have a healthy lifestyle to combat hypertension. Manage your hypertension diet by quickly writing down your meal plan on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Smoking and drinking alcohol should never be in the list of the things you should do. With enough vigilance with the food you eat, in no time you can ease away from hypertension and live a better and healthier life.

Primary (aka essential) hypertension has no known cause, however there are a number of lifestyle factors which do seem to effect the chances of developing hypertension.

Risk factors may be related to the environment, genetics and family history, smoking, diet, hormones, how much sodium (salt) you have in your diet or even the level of stress in your life.

Hypertension also increases your risk of having a stroke or heart attack, and can lead to other diseases as well as make other health conditions even worse. It is important to your health and your future to learn about the risk factors and by controlling and altering what you have control over you can change you decrease your risks.

? Exposure to environmental pollutants, such as tobacco smoke, vapors around the office, etc.

? Obesity – being over weight is a factor in hypertension, especially as one ages. Proper diet and weight loss may aid in reversing the associated problems.

? Lack of exercise – Daily ‘aerobic’ exercise (walking, swimming, running, cycling, etc.) can be very beneficial in decreasing blood pressure, as well as helping with your weight .

? Stress – we could all benefit from a little less of this. Exercise also helps with reducing your stress.

? Lower Alcohol Consumption – Drinking excessively doubles your chances of suffering high blood pressure or a stroke.

? Medicines and prescriptions (Ritalin, hormones, steroids, anti-rejection medications), your doctor and pharmacist should be intimately aware of what you are taking. Illegal drugs can also cause you problems (amphetamines, cocaine, ecstasy).

? Diet – a diet high in sodium puts strain on the blood vessels by increasing the fluid volume in the body (salt attracts water)

These risks can be helped or even controlled with the help of a doctor

? Pregnancy – the extra volume of blood, plus toxemia from high dietary salt intake can put a great strain on the vascular system.

? Kidney failure – the body is unable to remove fluids from the body causing an increase in fluid volume and blood pressure.

? Right-sided Heart Failure – decreases the hearts ability to pump high volumes of fluid through the heart causing a back-up into the blood vessels

Risk Factors over which you have no control

? Family history of hypertension especially onset before the age of 50.

? Age -your increases your chances of getting hypertension

? Gender (male or female)

? Race (Afro-American)

? Nervous System disorders

Secondary Hypertension

While the single cause of Primary hypertension is not known, the cause(s) of Secondary hypertension is and it is usually caused by another condition or disease. Conditions such as arteriosclerosis, diabetes, kidney disease, or even from medications and pregnancy (Gestational hypertension and is one of the reasons your doctor wants to see you more frequently near the end).

Hypertension can be caused either by taking medications or by stopping medications too quickly. Medications such as corticosteroids, birth control pills and other hormones, migraine medications, and medications used for chronic anemia (erythropoieten). Also a number of over-the-counter medications such as cough/cold medications and medications for asthma can cause hypertension.

Medications for hypertension can also cause a rebound hypertension if they are not weaned off of slowly.

Street drugs that can cause hypertension include: alcohol, amphetamines, ecstasy (MDMA and derivatives), and cocaine.

A small number of people experience malignant hypertension. This is an extremely high blood pressure that causes swelling of the optic nerve (the nerve that control vision). This is considered a medical emergency. Many of your vital organs are in serious risk of injury including your brain, your eyes, blood vessels, heart, and kidneys.

Are you diagnosed with high blood pressure? Are you sick of feeling tired in the morning and not knowing why?

You might not realize that both hypertension (high blood pressure) and sleep apnea (sleep disorder when your breathing stops) are related to each other. Recent research has found high blood pressure patients are more inclined to have a higher prevalence of sleep apnea. This research might explain why your spouse is always complaining about your snoring and why you always feel tired throughout the day.

Though things might sound bleak now, you can actually lower high blood pressure naturally and increase your levels of quality sleep with a few lifestyle changes.

And it might be simpler than you think!

Do you have high blood pressure?

Do you suffer from a cardiovascular disease? If you run the risk of high blood pressure, it would be recommended that you start treatment ASAP. High blood pressure has been nicknamed the ’silent killer’ because there are no symptoms to the disease which claims almost 50,000 lives each year. It has been stated that almost 1 and 3 adults are now walking time-bombs of hypertension.

Hypertension could be caused by any of the following factors: excessive alcohol consumption, high sodium (salt) intake, being overweight or obese, having high cholesterol, not exercising, high levels of stress, a poor diet or low levels of potassium, magnesium and calcium in your diet.

And the good news! You can lower high blood pressure in two weeks if you choose to be pro-active with simple nutrition and lifestyle changes.

Do you suffer from sleep apnea?

You might have sleep apnea and not even know it. About 10 percent of Americans stop breathing in their sleep and suffer from sleep apnea. It has been reported that an average suffer can stop breathing in their sleep, sometimes up to 100 times an hour, every hour. And over time, the body’s sympathetic nervous system sets up an inflammatory response in the blood vessels causing increased high blood pressure. This sleep apnea phenomena causes a vicious cycle which could be fatal over time.

Sleep apnea suffers usually have the following symptoms: heavy snoring, periodic breathing stoppages, fatigue, high blood pressure, daytime headaches, and possible diabetes.

Naturally Lower High Blood Pressure and Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Do you remember how your teacher used to hark about the cause and effect? The cause of a problem will always create an effect! And it turns out, she was right. High blood pressure causes numerous problems including sleep apnea.

While you might develop it you can easily lower or control it. The best way to prevent developing it is to keep a close eye on it from the beginning.Older adults may be more prone to developing hypertension but if you start at a young age you can prevent it easier. There are a few things you want to watch for that cause high blood pressure. This is why we develop high blood pressure because we are not aware of what is causing it.

Weight plays a major role in developing high blood pressure. Overweight people are more likely to develop high blood pressure but do not be discouraged. Losing as little as ten pounds can help your blood pressure significantly.

Once you lose a measly ten pounds just imagine how much easier it will be to lose even more. A great way to keep losing and maintain a healthy weight is by a healthy diet. Your diet factors in to developing high blood pressure as well.

High amounts of salt and sodium intake can cause hypertension. Try to limit your meals on salt and opt for other seasonings instead. There is a wide variety of seasonings available so you are sure to find something you really like.

Also try to incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet. Eating more of these will help your blood pressure not to mention you will feel healthier as well.

Do you use tobacco or drink large amounts of alcohol? If so, this could be why you have developed high blood pressure. Both of these can raise your blood pressure so if possible try to quit or at least cut back on your use and consumption. This will significantly help lower or maintain a normal level of blood pressure.

African Americans are more prone to develop hypertension. It starts at an early age and can be more severe. African Americans also have a higher death rate from kidney disease and stroke than white Americans. Even so, you can still treat high blood pressure effectively.

Do you exercise regularly? If not you might be at risk for developing hypertension than those that do regular exercise. Luckily you can easily fix this by doing physical activity for at least thirty minutes a day. You might say, “I don’t have thirty minutes a day to set aside.” While you may not have thirty minutes all at once to set aside, you could probably find it easier to set aside ten minutes at a time.

If you find yourself stressed very easily over anything and everything you could easily develop high blood pressure. Yes, stress is a factor of high blood pressure. Stress is very common for many people but easily treatable. Is there something you enjoy doing that relaxes you?

Consider picking up a hobby that you find relaxing and lets you de-stress. Do this whenever you feel stressed to the max and do it often. Keeping your stress level low will help keep your blood pressure low as well.

Last but not least, certain medications can cause you to develop hypertension pressure. Are you on medications? You might consider talking with your doctor about their side effects and if they cause high blood pressure. Every time you start a new medication you want to ask your doctor about this.

It is never too late to take better care of your health so consider starting today. Keeping control of your blood pressure will help lower your risk of a stroke or heart and kidney disease. Talk with your doctor about any concerns or ask any questions you might have.

Hypertension a common disease that result from the consistent constant elevation of the systolic or diastolic pressure above 140/90 mmhg , the diagnosis of hypertension requires that elevated readings be present on atleast three occassions during several weeks .Hypertension causes no symptoms to motivate a person to seek treatment . When symptoms do occur , they signify either secondary causes of hypertension or effects of sustained elevation of Bp on target organs . When you consider the types of hypertension , it is of two types – primary hypertension and secondary hypertension .

PRIMARY HYPERTENSION :
It accounts for more than 90% of all cases and has no known case , although it is theorised that genetic factor , hormonal changes , and alterations in sympathetic tone all play a role in its development .

SECONDARY HYPERTENSION :
It develops as a consequence of particular underlying disease or condition . Now let us see the major risk factors of hypertension according to its types ,

Primary hypertension – The identified risk factors in primary hypertension are as follows :
1 , age – onset between 30 – 50 years of age , increases over 65 years of age .
2 , sex – males in young adulthood and early middle age , females after the age of 55 years .
3 , race – African-Americans as in caucasians .
4, family history .
5 , obesity .
6 , smoking .
7 , high salt diet .
8 , elevated serum lipids .
9 , alcohol .
10,sedentary life style .
11 , diabetes mellitus .
12 , socio-economic status .
13 ,emotional stress .

Secondary hypertension – Major risk factors of secondary hypertension include the following ,
1 , Coarctation or congenital narrowing of the aorta .
2 , Renal disease such as renal artery stenosis parenchymal disease and reno vascular disease . 3 , Endocrine disorders such as pheochromocytoma , cushing syndrome , hyper and primary aldosteronism .
4 , Neurologic disorders such as brain tumours , quadriplegia and head injury .
5 , Sleep apnoea .
6 , Medications , oestrogen replacement theraphy , oral contraceptive pills , and non – steroidal anti – inflammatory drugs .
7 , Pregnancy – induced hypertension . These are the major risk factors of hypertension which should be known to all , to prevent the hypertension

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, can be an extremely dangerous condition. It is often called the “silent killer” due to the fact that people who are suffering from hypertension or high blood pressure are often unaware of it until they are struck with a sudden heart attack or stroke. In many cases high blood pressure is not identified until a checkup at the doctor’s, often for some unrelated problem. So it’s important not to take any unnecessary risks and to pay attention to the following hypertension symptoms that you could suffer from.

It’s true that it’s easy to ignore high blood pressure early due to its lack of obvious symptoms but there’s no real excuse for it. Inexpensive digital blood pressure monitors are now widely available and many pharmacies offer blood pressure machines for their customers.

But if you do happen to be out of touch with your blood pressure there are a number of disturbing symptoms of advanced and dangerous levels of hypertension that you must pay attention to before your high blood pressure can get totally out of hand and put you in a critical health situation.

Three telltale symptoms of advanced high blood pressure can be:

- Blurred vision, other sight problems or sensitivity of the eyeballs to touch or light pressure

- Breathing difficulties upon any exertion

- Prolonged and/or acute mental or physical stress

There are plenty of other signs and symptoms that could indicate you are suffering hypertension. These include:

- Unexpected nosebleeds for no obvious reason

- Experiencing exhaustion despite having sufficient rest

- Experiencing confusion

- Buzzing in the ears

- Feeling of pain or tightening in the chest area

- The presence of blood in urine

- Chronic or severe headaches

- Palpitations or irregular heartbeat

These are just some of the possible symptoms and signs of a dangerous level of hypertension. It’s important to note that these symptoms can have numerous possible causes but must never be ignored, especially when a blood pressure check is so easy to do.

If you or a loved one experience any of these symptoms you should head immediately to the doctor for a checkup or even to the emergency room if the symptoms are severe. High blood pressure is very treatable, either pharmaceutically or through natural methods and lifestyle changes.

You diet plays a significant role in maintaining healthy blood pressure. Rather than focusing on specific foods you simply cannot go wrong with a varied diet of whole, natural foods high in fruits, vegetables, and grains and low in fat and sugar.

Salt intake can also play an important role in determining your blood pressure. The problem starts when your balance of sodium, magnesium and potassium goes out whack due to a diet of processed foods that are high in salt and low in the other minerals. Under these circumstances, consumption of a large amount of salt makes your blood pressure shoot sky high and even has the potential to kill you in extreme cases. The easiest approach to maintaining healthy sodium levels is to avoid salty foods and to never add extra salt to your food. There is plenty of sodium that exists naturally in many foods. Again, you won’t go wrong with a natural diet free of most processed foods.

To help prevent or reverse high blood pressure you need to learn to maintain a balanced diet. Cholesterol and saturated fats will clog the arteries and your heart will have to put in an immense amount of work to pump blood through your system, thereby creating high blood pressure. At the same time, if you are overweight, losing a little bit of weight will help to ease your current blood pressure level. Start an exercise regimen – even simply walking 30 minutes a day will help – and adhere to it. In addition to strengthening your heart, exercising will help to burn away cholesterol and saturated fats, easing the potential for blockages of the arteries.

Another important way to benefit your blood pressure is to learn some of the simple ways to relieve stress. Chronic stress is recognized as one of the major factors leading to hypertension and is often connected with heart disease. You don’t necessarily need complex solutions like yoga or meditation. Simple pleasures like listening to music or relaxing in a hot tub are equally beneficial and increase both your mental and physical well-being.

Hypertension is implicated in many other deadly diseases and health conditions. So if you can learn to maintain healthy blood pressure you can avoid many future health problems and suffering.

If you are looking for a natural way of helping to control high blood pressure then a great place to start is by modifying your diet. A diet designed to reduce blood pressure should include plenty of fresh, fruits and vegetables as they contain essential minerals, nutrients and fiber, which can all help in a treatment plan to reduce high blood pressure. So what kinds of high blood pressure fruits and vegetables should a person be choosing to eat?

Generally a person should be eating fruits and vegetables which contain high amounts of fiber in them. This will help suppress the appetite and help the digestive process.

Fruits and vegetables to include in a diet to reduce high blood pressure include the following:

Asparagus
Carrots
Broccoli
Peas
Corn
Strawberries
Oranges
Apples
Pears
Bananas
Lentils
Chickpeas

But, most vegetables and fruits can be added into the diet, and they should replace the foods that need to be restricted from a high blood pressure diet, including processed foods, foods that contain high levels of sodium and food that are high in saturated fats.

The great thing about substituting these particular foods for those that are high in fat is not only do they make you feel fuller quicker, but they also provide you with good sources of nutrients and minerals, which are vital to keep your body healthy and boost the immune system.

Continue reading to discover how to sign up for our free newsletter and find out how to naturally relieve high blood pressure today.

Also by eating more fruit and vegetables there is normally a natural reduction in the volume of calories consumed, and in many cases just by cutting back on the number of calories, thereby reducing weight, there is knock on reduction in the high blood pressure.

As well as increasing the amount of fiber you have in your diet you should also increase the amount of potassium as well. Fruit that is rich in potassium are bananas.

Why not place a few in a liquidizer with some freshly squeezed orange juice and some raspberries and you will have a really great tasting drink that is also helping to lower blood pressure, as it contains high amounts of fiber, potassium and all other beneficial nutrients.

To ensure that there is a sufficient mix of nutrients and variety in the diet, try and include three different colored vegetables on the plate for every meal. So for example you could have some grated carrot along with some lettuce and a couple of cherry tomato.

Also, if you do need to cook your vegetables or fruit it is best if they are steamed. This way they will not lose so many of their essential properties, which are vital to maintaining a healthy body.

A number of studies have been carried out show changing your diet can have the same beneficial impact on high blood pressure as taking medication. This does not mean that the medication prescribed by the doctor should not be taken – Of course it should. But it means that if a good diet is followed then the blood pressure can be regulated much faster, and the effects can last for longer.

A high blood pressure, fruits and vegetables diet, with the inclusion of lean low fat meats, can mean that not only is the blood pressure reduced, but also those that are overweight usually find they lose weight as well. Discuss any changes in diet before you make them with your doctor.
